The language arts curriculum is a combination of literature and practice drills from specific Kindergarten materials, individual reading books, books from the Cupertino School District Core Literature list, and my own literature and poetry selections. Whole-class instruction, small group literacy centers, and individual class work will take place during this activity period. Kindergarten materials - HOUGHTON MIFFLIN: this is the state-adopted language arts programs that all classes at Eaton use for reading. It includes big book stories for each week, vocabulary cards, and a student workbook that goes along with the stories. - STEP UP TO WRITING: this is the district-adopted writing program that all classes use. It teaches students how to organize their writing in a red, yellow, green outline before drafting their papers. It also teaches skills to improve transitions between sentences, how to begin and conclude writing, as well as how to add more interesting details within sentences. Listening and Speaking (Oral Language): - Can listen and respond in complete sentences - Can recite familiar songs, rhymes, and stories - Can show fluency when speaking - Can participate in classroom discussions Reading: - Can identify big and small letter sounds and names - Can orally blend sounds in simple words - Can provide rhyming words - Can identify concepts of print - Can read simple one-syllable and high frequency sight words - Can use pictures and context clues to understand important details in stories - Can identify main characters, setting, and important events in stories Writing - Handwriting: we will practice letter formation and neatness while writing. The Cupertino Union School District adopted the ball-and-stick handwriting method. - Can write uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet independently - Begins to use writing conventions such as punctuation, capitalization, and spacing. - Can write unfamiliar words by phonetically sounding out words. - Begins to write simple, complete sentences. Poetry: weekly selections will be chosen to recite for choral reading during our calendar routine. |
